There will be a meeting Feb. 12 in Hotchkiss to plan recycling education activities for 2010 This will include how to get the guide up to date so we can publish it again, improving the information gathered from our Delta phone line, improving the website, getting out to the schools, and other things. Please note we’ve updated the Delta County Recycling guide to reflect a change in service by North Fork Recycling. They can no longer accept plastics #3-7, but they continue to accept plastics #1 and #2.

Fluorescent tubes 4′ and 8′ long can now be recycled in addition to compact fluorescent bulbs at local ACE hardware stores. Under some conditions there is a small fee so please call for information first. You can find more information on locations on our 2009 recycling guide. Click in the upper right hand corner for a copy.

A new version of the recycling guide is available! We just completed the process of updating all of the recycling opportunities in the county and compiled them all for you in our new guide. This guide will fit on four 8.5″ X 11″ (letter-sized) pieces of paper.

The recycling day held in the Wal-Mart parking lot last April 2008 resulted in the legal and safe disposal of over an estimated 900 items including working and non-working computers, copiers, cell phones, VCRs , fax machines, TVs, stereos and other electronic equipment. One of the goals of the event was to collect items containing toxic substances to prevent those substances ending up in the county landfill. These materials weighed a total of 22,419 lbs and contained as much as 1645 lbs of lead, 7500 lbs of plastic and other materials including glass, and other toxic metals such as mercury and barium. DELTA: Ace Hardware in Delta will take and recycle your used rechargeable batteries from small electronic devices such as you cell phone or drill. Call for more information 874-9515.
GRAND JUNCTION: Batteries Plus in Grand Junction to take ANY used battery for recycling. Call to confirm at 245-7000.
PAONIA: West’s Radio Shack in Paonia will take used rechargeable batteries for recycling. Call to confirm at 527-4995.

The Ace Hardware stores in Delta and Hotchkiss are now accepting used CFLs (Compact Florescent Lightbulbs) for recycling. These are the small bulbs you use in a lamp or light fixture, not to be confused with the larger tubes.
